Season of HOPES: Lower Class Royalty

Month of November is a season to reflect and appreciate. At LULA101,  it is an opportunity to celebrate the founding inspirations behind each lifestyle brands, and appreciate the prosperous partnerships began with simple dreams and big HOPES.

One of the longest partner brands had started the journey with LULA101 since the beginning, was the trend-setting iconic lifestyle brand – REBEL8. Founded in Bay area and now home-based in the City of Angels, the story is legendary and classic of its own.  IMG_3493

Started with nothing more than $500 dollars and a prayer, the REBEL8 brand began its humble chapter in 2003 from Josh D.’s bedroom. Not by choice nor design, the inaugural t-shirts were an “friends and family” exclusive and the money from the first sales went directly right back into print more shirts. Nothing came easy, REBEL8 took one-step at a time and flourish as one of the celebrated American original brands in the past decade.

As the “8 movement” continues to spread, it took a major leap over the Pacific in 2006.

With nearly 15 years of expertise in regional trends and merchandise placement, LULA101 has held a distinctive niche in encompassing celebrated American original and designer brands, collections and accessories to the ever-expanding Asian-Pacific market places. Through LULA101‘s complete streamline solution, the REBEL8 brand is available in 10 Asian countries, and continue to experience steady growth.

The partnership also traveled Joshy D. through two Asia-Pacific tours, with the first-hand opportunity to establish exclusive dialog with local fans and participate in regional festivities. Each trip brought Joshy D. closer to the unique culture and experience the lifestyle trends. The impact had strengthen the regional grassroots following, and expand to various of market opportunities for the REBEL8 brand.

Started in San Francisco, REBEL8 is now one of the feature brands been embraced at the premium HOPES fashion retail platform in Ximending (Taipei City) – the trendsetting fashion district of Taiwan. With an inviting floor plan and inventive decor, HOPES store is an established fashion stage with big spotlight and vibrant energy. It is a regional popular destination, and an exclusive venue to experience the latest American original collections.

In November, as the HOPES store is celebrating its first Anniversary with friends and partners around the world, the REBEL8 brand was the first to extend its warmest wishes and strongest support for more prosperous years to come.

November is a season to reflect and appreciate,  LULA101, Regain International and HOPES Taiwan want to express the sincere appreciation to Joshy D. and the REBEL8 brand for the continuous support and genuine partnership.

Lula’s successful AGENDA 101

The most diverse and creative lifestyle fashion trade show in the world, Agenda Show, was held in Long Beach on July 8 and 9. Located between LA and OC, Long Beach is the perfect spot for Agenda because of the abundance of action sports, lifestyle and streetwear brands in Southern California. Agenda showcases more than 750 brands, including contemporary, women’s, accessories, action sports, outdoor, footwear, and both surf/ skate hard products.IMG_0071

Bringing the coolest brand into the Asian market, as always, Lula 101 went to check out this innovative experience. Some of the brands’ reps and owners that we had a chance to meet up with included CLSC, Civil, REBEL8, Rastaclat, Black Scale, Clear Weather, MishkaDOPE, and In4mation.

IMG_0280REBEL8’s booth was amazing with its wall made up of four layers including a CRT television (pictured below). Incredibly creative with a retro feel to it. One of the TVs was showing the video (Taiwandering with Joshy ) we shot when Joshy visited Taiwan in 2014.

Along with all of the brands on display, there is no shortage of food, music, entertainment and people-watching to keep attendees entertained.IMG_0248

Agenda show helps Lula continue delivering Service, Styles and Smiles to our customers. We can’t wait to visit next show and hang out with all of our awesome partners again … including my friend, Mishka’s Giant Bootleg Kaiju!

REBEL8 Taiwan ambassador – Benjamin Lin @ Ink- N- Iron

The 13th annual Ink- N- Iron festival  took place on the great Queen Mary ship in Long Beach, CA recently. Long Beach was the tattoo cultural engine of the West Coast and the center where techniques and trends evolved. People from all over the world come to support this event and enjoy the vibes of the tattoo convention … including Lula!

For one with no tattoo, like myself, It is very intriguing to watch these talented tattoo artists draw tattoos on others. Some of the best tattoo artists in the world attend this event to showcase their work, ink, apparel, etc. Along with the tattoo convention, there is also a car show and live music event.

Started his tattoo career since he was 16 years old, Benjamin is infamous, controversial and yet interesting. Stay tuned for our interview video with Benjamin Lin in the next few days!

REBEL8 Taiwan ambassador – Endless Sun

Today’s spot light is on Endless Sun, a.k.a. Xiao-Mao – the popular and highly skilled tattoo artist who owns Endless Tattoo studio in Taipei, Taiwan.

As a REBEL8 brand ambassador in Taiwan, Endless Sun never fails to “Spread the 8″ wherever he goes (REBEL8 is deeply rooted in tattoo, graffiti and skate culture). Endless Sun recently entered an Amsterdam tattoo contest and literally showed his love for REBEL8 throughout his trip there.

REBEL8 the great

REBEL8 does it again! They just released their Summer 2015 collection for men and women. Get your favorite look for summer and have everyone talking.

One of their new collections, named “Speedway,” is inspired by American muscle and drag racing. The photoshoot was at Formula Drift, the premier United States drifting series, to really incorporate the racing into it. This collection is geared towards the automobile enthusiast and contains many motorsport graphics.

REBEL8 is always designing with creativity in mind. They came up with an innovative idea to use Mike Giant‘s fingerprint as a repetitive pattern, but also as part of the logo. Can you guess what the collection is called? “Thumbs Up”

First look at a glance and this pattern almost gives a snakeskin feel to it!

Big success on Lula’s Multi-brand store opening – HOPES

Taipei, Taiwan – 11 / 18 / 2014

HOPES, the new flagship American streetwear store in Taipei, invited celebrities, tattoo artists, rappers, news media, trendsetters and fans at its November launch party in trendsetting Ximending. Showcasing top U.S. brands like REBEL8, Mishka, Benny Gold, 10DEEP, Rastaclat, Melin Brand, the HOPES grand opening event gave the standing-room only crowd a taste of the must-have styles for fans.

Grand Open!

HOPES guests were welcomed by the always entertaining MC Lan Yeh and were treated to a special performance by Taipei’s very own DJ Kid. HOPES also commissioned renowned graffiti artist, Rookie, to create a special art installation that was unveiled in the store, and that, along with food, beverages and music made for a day that will not soon be forgotten.

Upon entering HOPES, fans reveled in the skateboard décor, street art and posters with signatures from major U.S. brand owner, giving you the feeling of walking into an urban New York City gallery.

MC Lanyeh

MC Lan Yeh, always energetic and humorous, opened the launch party by welcoming the fans and noting how HOPES is the only store in all of Taiwan to offer such a unique mix of U.S. brands and styles and then welcoming company founder, Sherry, to share the stage with him. Sherry also thanked the HOPES brand fans and told her inspiring story. It’s the tale of how a dream, coupled with vision, hard work and building strong relationships with brands and fans, can help anyone achieve success. “Embrace your hopes, realize your dreams” is a HOPES’ core value that anyone can benefit from.

DJ Kid

DJ Kid then took to the stage and transformed the event into an American-style nightclub venue with his exceptional turntable skills. HOPES’ guests grooved to his music, dancing began, and the crowd showered their appreciation on him with whistles and applause.

After his performance, DJ Kid shared stories of his passion for music. At 15-years-old, he discovered his calling, and after countless hours of practice and intense training, his hard work paid off – he placed first at a National Music Competition. From that point on, he became more and more famous in the industry. DJ Kid and Sherry Lu share the same dream: if you insist on pursuing your dream and never give up, you will succeed.

HOPES fans saw that DJ Kid was wearing a very special hat at the grand opening. The hat belongs to one of the newest brands that HOPES store carries – Melin. Their high-end headwear has topflight features like full-grain lamb Napa leather and other premium materials, unique serial numbers and quality packaging. Fans call Melin the Rolls-Royce of headwear for good reason. Melin isn’t for everyone – you have to earn it. At the grand opening, a video of how Melin was founded and flourished, and then a Melin hat valued at $200 was presented to a fan who won a short quiz about the brand.

Rookie – one of the most famous graffiti artists in Taiwan – talked with Sherry about his fascinating artwork, including his special HOPES store installation piece. Rookie used the dressing room’s sliding doors as his canvas. When the doors are closed, the monotone outer artwork suggests dark, unknown matter but, once opened, a luminously unique “HOPES” awakens your senses.

The birth of HOPES

HOPES’ founder – Sherry Lu, came to the states in 2001 with little money, no acquaintances and without being fluent in English. But what she had was a dream. An American Dream.

Knowing that coming to a new country with nothing but the clothes on her back and few possessions would be challenging, her undefeatable “We Can Do It!” spirit drove her to succeed beyond her wildest dreams.

Working tirelessly, Sherry was able to open her first U.S. store, yes, “HOPES,” which ultimately led to her become a leader in the wholesale distribution of U.S. brands in Asia. Fast forward to 2014, HOPES Taipei is bringing the U.S. lifestyle, attitude and trendsetting culture to Taiwan.

The American Dream is also the Taiwanese Dream.

As fans, celebrities and artists partied at the HOPES grand opening, Sherry thanked everyone for their ongoing support. Even the brand founders took part in the festivities in a special video presentation where they talked about their dreams while giving warm shout-outs to HOPES and the fans who support their brands.

Watch it here: (Video link: https://vimeo.com/112301783 ).

After a good time was had by all and many new brand fans and friendships were made, the grand opening press event ended and the VIP fans opening party began, with more entertainment and special surprises, including a HOPES photo booth, U.S. brands cupcakes and much more.

Taiwanderings With REBEL8

Taiwanderings with REBEL8 from Lula Apparel on Vimeo.

Always up for a new adventure, when REBEL8 founder Joshy D. was greeted at Taiwan’s Taiyuan Airport, he was grinning like a kid in a candy store. Greeted by Lula 101 founder and president, Sherry Lu, and chief marketing officer, Bill Ross, they collectively served as his translator, tour guide and fellow party animals.

The first order of business after settling in at a hotel in Taiwan’s Ximending shopping district was to grab lunch at a local café. Not knowing exactly what type of Taiwanese food Joshy might like, we ordered everything on the menu. And Joshy didn’t disappoint, because he tried it all, including a nice, tall Taiwan Beer to wash it all down.

Stuffed with food, we needed to walk it off, which was an ideal opportunity to show Joshy the sights and sounds that make Taipei so cool, unique and sometimes a little weird.

Armed with his trusty camera, Joshy took pictures of anything and everything, from signs with English wording that had funny translations to the Modern Toilet Restaurant: “Please kindly invite your friends to eat shit.” Modern Toilet offers enticing fare like “baby’s explosive diarrhea” (actually just green curry) served in mini toilet bowls.

Taipei also has of the highest per capita concentrations of convenience stores on earth. Where else can you pay your college tuition, eat dinner, print concert tickets, send express mail and buy a bottle of Johnny Walker Scotch at 4:30 a.m.?

Oh, and let’s not forget the Taiwan garbage trucks. Where else in the world will you find garbage trucks that sing to you?

When not walking, we took taxis rather using rented cars. A note to foreigners: Never – ever – rent a car in Taiwan … stick with public transportation! Although Taiwanese are the nicest people in the world, they morph into street-mob sadists once they hop on a scooter or get behind the wheel. Most of the Taiwanese taxi drivers are at the top of the motorized food chain, and most are very friendly, although we did meet one who must have had a wife who denied him wifely pleasures, because he was grumpy as hell … and nearly killed us.

Joshy continued to embrace opportunities to try something different. From the hotel’s huge Taiwanese buffet, to alley cafes, he couldn’t get enough. But nothing matched the intrigue of the night markets. They come alive after five, and the sights and smells draw you further and further into an endless abyss of food stands and goods for sale. So we hit all the night markets in Taipei as well as one in Kaohsiung. And while he did enjoy Taiwanese sausages on a stick, and even drank snake blood, he drew the line at trying the Stinky Tofu … the name says it all.

Ever the intrepid explorer, Joshy even tried Bin Lang, which is what Taiwanese call betel nuts; which are chewed like tobacco and have a stimulant effect, not to mention turning one’ teeth brown in short order. Oftentimes, sexy Bin Lang girls are the ones selling them in side-of-the-road stands that have flashy neon lights to draw attention to them (as if being dressed in lingerie and all made up isn’t attention-grabbing enough as it is), but we had no such luck when buying Bin Lang for Joshy. Maybe it’s just as well … he probably didn’t need that kind of distraction.

But Joshy wasn’t just in Taiwan to eat new foods or see new sights, such as what was once the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101. No, he was there to visit with his fans at the streetwear shops, tattoo parlors and even at the annual tattoo convention in Kaohsiung, where he served as a special guest judge at its tattoo contest. While there, he was signing his autograph on people’s posters, REBEL8 shirts and hats, and even one girl’s left boob (her request, not his).

Back in Taipei, Joshy was particularly intrigued by the Buddhist temples, where he burned incense and prayed to the various Buddhas – particularly the god of financial matters in order to make REBEL8 even more successful than it already is, and the god of fertility. (After all, even Joshy wants to make little Joshy ’s one of these days.)

It seemed like everywhere we visited, magazine and newspaper reporters wanted interview to find out more about how REBEL8 was started and how Joshy and Mike Giant began working together with almost no money at the beginning. Joshy did not disappoint, and he was happy to talk to everyone who had questions for him. However, that made for tiring days; so much more Taiwan beer was needed at the end of each day to power him through the evening.

The clubbing scene’s no slouch either, and we were invited to attend a VIP gathering at the Luxy Club, complete with live bands, sexy go-go dancers and, of course, lots of Taiwan beers.

No visit to Taiwan would be complete without a good foot and body massage, and even though our masseuses seemed hell-bent on making us all cry out in pain as they worked the knots out of our sore muscles; miraculously we all felt refreshed and relaxed after the deed was done.

Joshy wound up his visiting local museums, taking lots more photos of the sights, including Taiwanese graffiti and saying good-bye to countless REBEL8 fans, one of whom had asked him to write his signature and REBEL8 on his forearm – and then had it promptly tattooed there to make it permanent. Now THAT’s fan devotion for you. Or maybe it was just the Taiwan Beer.
